Excerpt from Better
Back, Better Body
by Joanne Broatch:
This book
is an answer to hundreds of people who have asked for information about
inversion and what it might do for them - for their backs and for their
bodies.
In 1980,
I was not aware that back problems were the number one health issue in North
America. And although I had seen Richard Gere hanging from the ceiling by
his ankles in the movie American Gigolo, I had never heard of
inversion therapy.
Then one
April, two of us were in a small community on the California desert watching
a woman hang by her ankles from an inversion bed and we were listening to
her story. She had suffered multiple whiplash injuries, followed by months
of drug, medical, chiropractic and physical therapy, with no relief from the
excruciating pain. It sounded to us like a familiar story. Then she was
introduced to inversion therapy by way of a device called a Backswing. Her
routine was to use it daily at least twice for 5-10 minutes. She told us
that now the pain from her neck was gone and her back and body felt better
than they ever had - even before her injury.
It was an
impressive testimonial.
Since
then we have talked to hundreds of people who somehow knew that to hang was
to get relief from back pain. We have seen boots nailed to rafters, and
planks rigged to pulleys, all tributes to the instinct and ingenuity of
people suffering from back pain...
Since
then we have talked to dozens of professionals and we have come to
appreciate the wide range of knowledge and opinion there. Some are quoted in
this book.
Since
then we have read as much as we could find in an effort to discover how and
why inversion works. We have listed some of the books and articles that we
found useful. So if you are still searching for some way to live with your
back, or if you are interested in actively maintaining your health or if you
are just curious about what inversion therapy is all about, this is a book
for you.
This book
will bring you: a simple description of how your back works, some
understandable explanations about why backs hurt, and some solid suggestions
about how to live with your back.
So far,
just another back book - but there's more. This book will also bring
together for you: everything that we have been able to find out about
inversion, what inversion can do for your back, and what inversion can do
for the rest of your body...
